I have long supported efforts to help small businesses grow and expand. Small businesses are America's job creators and the main engine of our economy. They create hope and opportunity for our entrepreneurs and workers, and are essential to our nation's economic prosperity. These businesses employ more than half of the nation's private-sector workforce. In Kansas, small businesses are vital to the financial well-being of the state's economy. More than 96 percent of businesses in Kansas are small businesses, according to the Small Business Administration (SBA). Their contribution is essential for economic growth since they account for the largest share of commerce in the state.
As a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), which has jurisdiction over the U.S. Department of Labor and its underlying agencies, I strive to ensure safe working places for all Americans and welcome advice and counsel from Kansas small business owners regarding regulatory requirements that affect their operations. Please know I will continue to work to ensure that Congress provides an environment that fosters the growth of small businesses.
