WASHINGTON, D.C. –Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) released the following statement in remembrance of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in Pennsylvania, New York and Washington:

“Twelve short years ago our nation took a blow the likes of which we could never have imagined. We lost mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, and friends; families were torn apart, and our country was dragged into a war with radical Islam that we never sought and never wanted. 

“But from the ashes of the horrific attacks in New York, Washington, and on Flight 93, we saw many of our fellow Americans rise to historic heights: firefighters and police officers rushing into falling buildings, our men and women in uniform bravely taking to the battlefield, and the American people uniting together in the face of our enemies. 

“So today, twelve years later and in a nation far less united, it is important to come together and remember the men and women who died on that fateful day and those we have lost in the defense of freedom since. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Our prayers continue to go to their families and loved ones.  We should also pause to thank those still holding the torch, serving our country so valiantly. Thank you for fighting to keep our country safe – and free.”
