WASHINGTON, DC– U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today announced over $1.24 million in twenty-one grants were awarded to Kansas firefighters to improve homeland security.
Senator Roberts said, “I am pleased to announce these funds, which are vital to improve firefighting efforts and first responder needs in rural Kansas. It’s imperative to support our local fire departments.”

• Summerfield Volunteer Fire Department: $49,993 for Fire Operations and Safety
• Grandview Plaza Volunteer Fire Department: $4,963 for Fire Operations and Safety
• Saline County Fire District #5 in New Cambria: $17,100 for Fire Operations and Safety
• Towanda Fire Department: $180,500 for Vehicle Acquisition
• Jefferson Fire District #10 in Winchester: $213,750 for Vehicle Acquisition
• Cowley County Fire District #2 in Atlanta: $39,735 for Fire Operations and Safety
• Valley Center Fire Department: $12,343 for Fire Operations and Safety
• Halstead Fire/EMS: $41,325 for Fire Operations and Safety
• Oketo/Balderson Rural Fire District #5: $10,612 for Fire Operations and Safety

The funds were awarded by the 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program under the United States Department of Homeland Security. The program assists rural, urban and suburban fire departments throughout the United States.
