WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Pat Roberts moved to protect the American taxpayer by voting to prohibit the release of additional funds from the $700 billion Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) because of serious concerns about the spending and management of the funds to date. Senator Roberts voted against the creation of the TARP last October.
"Kansans and many Americans suffering from this recession have nothing to show for the first $350 billion in TARP funds," Roberts said. "I oppose the release of the remaining $350 billion in TARP funds because the program was not implemented as approved by Congress, there is not sufficient transparency and accountability for how the funds have been spent, and there are no assurances that additional funds would be used in a way that benefits Kansans."
Roberts co-sponsored and voted to support Senate Joint Resolution 5, a bill to disapprove the release of the remaining $350 billion from the TARP. The measure was not approved with a vote of 42-52.
