Press Releases
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today celebrated the dedication of the Ft. Riley Veterans Cemetery. Roberts is recovering from knee surgery and could not attend the ceremony, but sent the following letter to be read applauding the team effort leading to the expansion and commending the men and women who are currently serving our nation.
"Dear Friends and Veterans:
"Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this important ceremony today. While I am unable to be with you in person, I appreciate being able to share a few words to honor those whose efforts helped make this day possible and to dedicate the expansion of the Ft. Riley Veterans Cemetery.
"With the help of former Congressman Jim Ryun in 2000, we were able to include language in the 2001 National Defense Authorization Act to provide the land for the cemetery expansion. It has taken some time, but through the dedication and hard work of many here today, this moment has arrived. I would like to thank both Jack Fowler and Kafer Peele with the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs and also former State Senator Lana Oleen for their work in this collaborative effort. I would also like to thank Colonel Piscal and the leadership here at Ft. Riley for all of your support and work on the cemetery expansion.
"As American citizens, whose freedom and liberty are protected by those who have worn the uniform, it is our duty to honor their sacrifices. This final resting place is not only for families and friends to mourn the loss of a loved one, but also to honor their sacrifice. The hallowed ground that we dedicate is our nation’s way of paying a final tribute to those men and women who have served their country with bravery and valor. To provide a final place of rest is one of the highest forms of gratitude our nation owes to our departed heroes. I am grateful to be a part of this day. Just as significant as the expansion of the cemetery is the fact it is located on Ft. Riley grounds, where the important work of training men and women in the defense of our nation continues.
"As we pause today to pay homage to America’s heroes who find peace here, let us also reflect on our service members fighting the current battles in Iraq, Afghanistan and throughout the world. We are humbled by your commitment and sacrifice. Semper Fi."
Senator Roberts is a former Marine and is an outspoken advocate for men and women in uniform and their families.
