WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today announced his support for a new effort aimed at passing a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution, to bring much-needed fiscal discipline back to Washington and dramatically cut the national debt by $14 trillion.

“Over the last few years, the debt ceiling has been raised four times,” said Roberts. “It is time to stop this kind of reckless spending and restore some fiscal sanity to our country. If Congress is serious about cutting our ballooning deficit, then we must pass a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution.”

Roberts joined Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and more than a dozen colleagues at a press conference today unveiling a consensus Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution.

Roberts is also a co-sponsor of an amendment by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), S.J. Res. 3, and another introduced by Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ark.), S.J. Res 4. Both resolutions seek to cap government spending at a certain percentage of GDP, unless Congress authorizes further spending.
