WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) today questioned Dr. Stephen Hahn, nominee for Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, about standards for animal health, biotechnology and CBD during Dr. Hahn’s confirmation hearing. Sen. Roberts and Dr. Hahn discussed the potential risks for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) from agriculture production. Roberts urged Dr. Hahn to continue using a risk-based approach to achieve the best outcomes for animal and human health. Roberts also questioned Dr. Hahn on biotechnology and updating the Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology. Roberts concluded his questioning by asking Dr. Hahn about hemp, which was legalized in the 2018 Farm Bill. “There are currently many questions about the safety of using these products, including interactions with other drugs, dosing and even manufacturing standards to confirm that what is in a bottle is the same as what it says and is not contaminated with other substances,” said Roberts.
