WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today voted to block ACORN, an organization under criminal indictment, from receiving federal funding.

Senator Roberts is a cosponsor of Senator Mike Johanns’ (R-NE) amendment to the Fiscal Year 2010 Department of Treasury and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) appropriations bill to prohibit the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) from receiving federal funding from grant programs within HUD. ACORN is under indictment for violating voter registration laws in the State of Nevada.

“Taxpayers have a right to demand that Congress spend their money wisely,” Roberts said,”especially at a time when trillions of dollars are headed out the door. ACORN has for years, been entangled in tax evasion, voter fraud and other controversial and politically skewed behaviors. It is time we quit sanctioning these actions with millions in federal funds.”

The Johanns Amendment was agreed to with a vote of 83-7. Senator Roberts voted for a similar amendment during consideration of H.R.1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
