WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts announced the launch of the Roberts Regulation Review on his official website. This page will serve as a regulation clearinghouse to inform and allow Kansans to weigh in on proposed regulations. Senator Roberts will post summaries of new regulations, as well as links to the full text, and link visitors to the correct page of Regulations.Gov to submit comments directly to the appropriate department.
The first regulation review featured on the new site is the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s newly proposed snack rule. The USDA has opened a required 60 day comment period on new school snacks or “competitive foods” proposed rules. The rules and instructions to make a comment can be found here.
Last year there was significant backlash to the implementation of similar USDA rules for the School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.
To avoid similar controversy and to ensure Kansans’ voices are heard before the new set of regulations go into effect, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today released a public service announcement calling on interested Kansans to utilize the 60 day comment period for the new USDA proposed rules for school snacks and beverages. These new rules will determine what is available to students in vending machines and in a la carte offerings of school meals.
PSA Script:
“Hi this is Senator Pat Roberts. Are you upset that the Federal Government wants to choose what our kids eat at school? It’s time to let the Obama Administration know!”
“The USDA is now offering a public comment period on its proposed new rules restricting what foods and drinks can be offered in school vending machines and on snack menus.”
“Your views can shape these new rules, but you must submit your comments to the USDA before the April 9th deadline.”
“To read the rules and submit your comments please visit Roberts.Senate.Gov and click on the Regulation Review button.”
“That’s Roberts.senate.gov. Kansas, let your voice be heard!”
