WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Pat Roberts applauded the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for developing a flexible rental assessment policy for those continuing to live in FEMA trailers recognizing the unique circumstances facing many Greensburg residents.

"I am pleased FEMA has responded to the concerns of Greensburg residents," Senator Roberts said. "We heard from many folks worried about paying excessive rent for their trailer who are also struggling to pay mortgages on houses not yet move-in ready. It was important to help these residents trying to rebuild and remain in Greensburg."

At issue were requirements in the Stafford Act to charge rent following the 18 month period of free housing provided by FEMA. The rent determined by a FEMA formula was as high as $700, a sum far beyond the reach of many working hard to rebuild their homes. Due to weather, labor shortages and other issues out of their control, remaining residents have been forced to wait longer than anticipated for permanent housing.

After hearing from residents extremely concerned about the rental assessment, Senator Roberts contacted FEMA urgently requesting a resolution.

FEMA will now determine rent individually for each household. For the month of November, each household will pay $50, increasing by $50 each month until the maximum rental rate for that household is reached.

"Once again, I thank those in the FEMA Region VII office for acknowledging Greensburg’s housing challenges can not be met with one-size-fits-all regulations," Senator Roberts said. "The willingness to respond effectively to this situation is very much appreciated and will bring great peace of mind to many."
