WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) released the following statement today regarding the United States reaching its legal debt limit:

“Our nation reached the debt limit today, and we have seen no leadership from the White House on addressing this issue of grave national concern,” said Roberts. “Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has testified that the biggest national security threat we face is the national debt. Under these circumstances, leadership from the White House is imperative. The Senate Finance Committee has held hearings on this issue but there is no initiative from the other side of the aisle to tackle the mandatory spending that is driving the debt. Kansas families are taking great measure to live within their means; the federal government must do the same. I will continue my efforts on behalf of the people of Kansas to rein in wasteful spending and bring down the national debt.”
