WASHINGTON, DC – Demonstrating his strong opposition to the newly signed government takeover of health care, Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS) joined Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) and a number of Senate colleagues in introducing legislation to fully repeal the bill that President Obama signed into law this morning.

“The majority of Americans and Kansans have repeatedly said they don’t support this bill,” Senator Roberts said. “Yet, Democrat leadership rammed this legislation through Congress despite leaving millions still uninsured, costing the nation $2.6 trillion when fully implemented, raising taxes in a tough economy, cutting Medicare and rationing care.”

“This new law is not real reform, and I will not stop fighting for true health care reform that the American people want and deserve. The law needs to be repealed as soon as possible and replaced with a plan that would actually lower health care costs for all families, and prohibit cost controls that would interfere with treatment decisions between doctors and patients. I will work with my Senate colleagues because we can and should do better in regards to real health care reform, especially in a bipartisan and step-by-step manner.”

The proposed legislation authored by Senator DeMint would repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act which was signed into law today. Senator Roberts voted against this partisan legislation, which was largely drafted behind closed doors, on Christmas Eve last year.

Twelve U.S. Senators have cosponsored this bill so far, including Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Robert Bennett (R-UT), Kit Bond (R-MO), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), Mike Crapo (R-ID), John Ensign (R-NV), Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX), James Inhofe (R-OK), George LeMieux (R-FL), James Risch (R-ID), Pat Roberts (R-KS) and David Vitter (R-LA).

Senator Roberts is a senior member of both the Senate Finance and Health Committees.
