Eisenhower Memorial: Full Steam Ahead

Senator Roberts, the Chairman of the Eisenhower Memorial Commission, announced the addition of key American leaders to the effort to honor Kansas’ own General Dwight David Eisenhower with a memorial on the National Mall. Former U.S. Senator Bob Dole will be the National Finance Chairman. Joining the Advisory Committee are former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, former Secretaries of State James Baker and Colin Powell, and former Majority Leaders of the U.S. Senate: Tom Daschle, Bill Frist, Trent Lott and George Mitchell. Tom Hanks, a key figure in the fundraising effort for the World War II Memorial, has also joined the effort.

These additions to the Advisory Committee demonstrate that there exists a powerful movement to build the Eisenhower Memorial and that movement has attracted support from leaders across the nation, and from a broad spectrum of American life.

Senator Roberts and Senator Dole were interviewed by CBS News and Greta Van Susteren of Fox News to call attention the National Campaign to build the memorial. For more information, visit http://eisenhowermemorial.gov/.

IRAN

Senator Roberts voted against the Iran Nuclear Agreement because President Obama’s deal with Iran is bad for America, puts allies at risk, and legitimizes Iran’s sponsorship of terrorism in the Middle East and in the world. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats blocked a vote on the president’s nuclear concession deal with Iran despite voting for the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act 98-1. The American people deserve to have their voices heard.

GITMO Terrorists to Ft. Leavenworth?

Not on Senator Roberts’ watch. When reports surfaced that President Obama was again attempting to shut down Guantanamo Bay and potentially transfer terrorists detained there to Fort Leavenworth, Senator Roberts declared that he would use all of the tools of the Senate to block this egregious overstep by the administration. He shut down this administration's nominee for Secretary of the Army in 2009 to prevent moving any detainees to Kansas and will do it again if necessary. Congress has consistently stopped Obama by law from moving a single detainee to the U.S.

In a recent call to U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, Roberts relayed his opposition to the relocation of GITMO detainees to Fort Leavenworth or to any other site on the mainland. Secretary Carter told Senator Roberts that Fort Leavenworth is neither the preferred nor the determined alternative for relocation. The Secretary indicated additional sites will be reviewed.

Kansas State Fair: “Fried in Joy”

Senator Roberts and his wife Franki made their annual trip to the Fair to see friends at the Kansas Farm Bureau Breakfast and to participate in WIBW Radio/Kansas Ag Network’s Washington Congressional Forum with Third District Congressman Kevin Yoder and forum moderator Kelly Lenz. Senator Roberts greeted fairgoers at his booth and listened to Kansans’ concerns about Iran, health care, regulations and the economy.

Preventing Cancer

Each year at the Fair, Senator Roberts and Franki serve as the honorary co-chairs of the Hutchinson Clinic/Prevent Cancer Foundation Health Awareness and Screening Booth. This year Senator Roberts and Franki took the pledge to prevent cancer by eating healthy foods and exercising. In exchange, fairgoers that took the pledge received a fresh orange!

Franki recently was honored for her work to help prevent cancer by the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s Congressional Families Cancer Prevention Program. She was honored along with Pulitzer Prize winning author Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee (he wrote "The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer") and Food Network star Sandra Lee.
