I want to make sure that Kansas children have every opportunity to receive a quality education. So, I support policies that foster increased access to post-secondary education because it is vital to securing America’s economic future.
In order to reduce the strain on students and families, federal income tax benefits have been created over the past several years to help students and their families meet post-secondary education expenses. Benefits such as the lifetime learning tax credit and a tax deduction for post-secondary education expenses have provided tax credits or deductions for expenses already incurred. Furthermore, taxpayers are able to receive federal income tax benefits for savings for college through Coverdell education savings accounts, qualified tuition programs, and education savings bonds. I strongly support these positive tax provisions.
Additionally, I have fought to ensure education assistance for veteran and military families. I am also a strong advocate of encouraging more students to pursue studies in math, science, technology, and critical foreign languages. As a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, I will continue to work with my colleagues to address college affordability and access for future generations to come.
