Roberts Report: Honoring Ike on the 75th Anniversary of V-E Day

Today is the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, marking the end of World War II in Europe when Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower accepted the surrender of Nazi Germany.

On this anniversary, the Eisenhower Memorial Commission, which I am honored to chair, originally planned on dedicating the presidential memorial on the National Mall, but like everything, those plans have been delayed until later this year.

The long-awaited Eisenhower Memorial, which pays tribute to Ike’s leadership as both Supreme Allied Commander and the 34th President of the United States, honors not only the extraordinary man, but also serves as a symbol for all generations of the promise of America and what our values make possible here and around the world.

The Memorial encourages all visitors to learn more about the critical role Ike played in shaping our nation, defining the U.S. on the world stage and leading us through 8 years of peace and prosperity.

I look forward to the fall, when we can give this memorial the dedication it deserves.

Resolution Honoring Kansas’ Favorite Son

This week, I introduced a resolution in the Senate, alongside Senator Jerry Moran, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Our resolution honors the men and women who sacrificed their lives for the freedom that millions of people throughout the world enjoy today.

It also recognizes the contributions of the thousands of members of the Armed Forces who returned home to their families and communities and reentered life in the United States.

The resolution celebrates the extraordinary service of 5-star General Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose mission it was to defeat the German Army and end World War II in Europe.
